Chasing History

Derek "Mr. Clutch" Jeter has now gone 0-for-12 since getting within striking distance of Lou Gehrig's club record for hits. I'm just saying.

Incidentally, the Yankees' club record for hits is 2,721. Teams with better club records in this category include: Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, LA Dodgers, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Louis.

UPDATE: It's pretty clear that I jinxed this one.

  1. The guy he's chasing died, which put a pretty big dent in his hits total. Gerhrig also set the club record in, like 600 fewer games. Jeter's pursuit isn't really a big deal. The man pretty much said as much himself.

  2. I'm not making fun of Lou Gehrig, but the Yankees have had plenty of players who didn't die...

"It's not a big deal" is also what I would say if I were choking while attempting to break a record.

  3. I don't understand. Are you saying the Yankees never fielded a team with players who could hit? That 16 teams have better club records is not a surprise, considering Gehrig is not the all-time leader; nor is he even close.

  4. Just remarking on the fact that the Yankees, for all their fancy history, have never had a 3000-hit man. And that Jeter is getting an awful lot of love for this record, considering how many guys you've never heard of have done more.
